Astrologer vs Psychic: What Is the Difference?

One reads a chart, the other reads you. Here is the practical difference between an astrologer and a psychic, what each is good for, and how to choose.

An astrologer interprets the positions of the planets at your birth, and their movement since, as a map of character and timing. A psychic claims to perceive information about you and your situation directly, without a chart. In practice the words are used loosely, and the label on a listing tells you less than the format, the price and the limits stated before you pay.

Those are the broad meanings reflected in Merriam-Webster's entries for astrologer and psychic. The difference that matters is the source: an astrologer works from data you supply, a psychic works from what they pick up.

The title alone does not prove accuracy, training or honesty. Before choosing either, look at the named reader, the exact format, what is included, the delivery time and what the reader says they cannot do.

Astrologer vs Psychic at a glance

What people usually mean by astrologer

People search for an astrologer when they want to understand themselves, their timing, or a relationship through a system: Sun, Moon and Rising signs, houses, transits, returns. The reading is an interpretation of a chart, and two astrologers can look at the same chart and emphasise different things.

The strength of astrology is that it is repeatable. You can learn to read your own chart, and the free birth chart calculator on this site gives you the placements to start with. My guides to Sun, Moon and Rising signs explain how I read them.

What people usually mean by psychic

People search for a psychic when they want an answer to a specific question rather than a system: will this work out, what is going on with this person, what should I watch for. The reading comes from the reader's impressions about you, not from a calculation.

The strength of a psychic reading is that it is specific to the question you asked. The limit is that it depends entirely on the reader, and it cannot be checked the way a chart can.

Can a psychic use astrology?

Yes, and many do. A reader who draws on your chart and on intuition is offering both at once. The useful question is which part of the reading came from which source, because a chart placement and a psychic impression deserve different kinds of trust.

If a reading tells you something about your Moon sign, you can check it. If it tells you how a particular person feels about you, you cannot, and no chart can confirm it either.

How to choose between them

Choose astrology when you want to understand a pattern, a personality or a season, and when you like being able to check the work. Choose a psychic reading when you have a specific question about a situation and want a direct interpretation of it. If you are not sure, start with the free chart, because it costs nothing and tells you whether the astrological frame speaks to you.

How this works on this site

The free birth chart gives you your placements. My written psychic reading is US$22 for up to three related questions by email within 48 hours, and it is read intuitively from your name and date of birth rather than from a chart. Whichever you choose, read the listing's scope and the customer reviews first, and keep the question about what you can see and decide rather than about proving what another person is doing.
