Death as Feelings: Changed, Ended and Not Going Back
Death rides a white horse with a black banner. Here is what I would read when it appears as someone's feelings, and why it is rarely about the end of feeling itself.
If you want the short answer, I would read Death as feelings that have changed permanently. In a feelings position the card suggests the way the person felt about you before is over, and that something else is taking its place: a different kind of feeling, a different distance, a different understanding. It does not tell you the feeling has died. It tells you the old version has.
This is the card people fear in a love question, and it is honest rather than cruel. The sun is rising between the towers in the picture. Nobody looks at that part first.
Death upright as feelings
Tina Gong's Death guide at Labyrinthos associates the upright card with endings, transformation, transition and letting go. When the card lands in a position that asks how someone feels about you, I read those meanings as the shape of the feeling rather than as a verdict on the person.
Upright, I read Death as a person for whom something about you, or about how they feel, has ended and cannot be restored: the infatuation has passed into something steadier, or the hope has passed into acceptance, or the relationship as it was has closed. What they feel now is real and it is not what they felt before.
What I would not read into it is indifference. Death is a card of transformation, and transformed feeling is still feeling. The question is what it has become, and that is for the next cards and for time.
What the card does not tell you
The card does not confirm that the person has stopped caring, that the change is against you, or that what comes next is worse than what ended. No card lets a reader check a real person's private feelings. What a card can do is give you an honest picture of the feeling you are hoping for or fearing, and a prompt to compare it with how the person actually behaves.
Death reversed as feelings
Reversed, Death is often read as resistance to change, a refusal to let go, or a transformation delayed. As feelings, I read the reversal as a person clinging to a version of feeling that has already ended, or refusing to admit that something between you has changed, which keeps both of you in a room with no door.
In your own question, ask which fits. Is the person holding on to how things were, past the point where it is true? Or is something clearly over that neither of you has said out loud? A reversed card is a prompt to notice which of those is true from what you can see, not a diagnosis of the other person.
Death as an ex's feelings
Asked about an ex, Death can suggest that what they felt for you has closed and they are not going back to it. That is a hard card to receive and it is also the one that most reliably sets people free. If a return comes after Death, it comes as something new, not as a resumption. My guide to asking a psychic whether an ex will come back explains what a reading can and cannot say about that question.
Death as a new person's feelings
For someone new, this card often describes a person who is changing, who has recently ended something, or whose feeling for you is part of becoming someone different. It can be a beginning that does not look like one. Give the sun time to rise.
What to watch for in their behaviour
Look for change that is already visible: they are not the person they were a month ago, they speak of before and after, they have let something go. A Death feeling shows as a different person standing where the old one was. Whether that person wants you is the next thing to learn.
What to record before drawing again
Keep three short notes: the question you asked, what has ended between you or in the person's life, and what you can see beginning. The third note is the sun between the towers. Another draw will mostly reflect the same rider on the same road.
For comparison, the Tower as feelings and the World as feelings describe different feelings.
