The Four of Pentacles Yes or No: No, Not While Everything Is Held
The Four of Pentacles is a no held in a tight grip. Here is how I read it for yes or no questions, upright and reversed, and why the reversal is about letting go.
If you want the short answer, the Four of Pentacles is a no. In a yes or no draw the upright card says the thing you are asking about is blocked by holding on too tightly, to money, to control, to the way things are, and that nothing new can arrive while every hand is full. It is a no about the grip, not about the goal.
This is a card of no as a figure clutching one coin with two under his feet and one on his head. He is secure. He cannot move.
Is the Four of Pentacles a yes or a no?
Upright, I read the Four of Pentacles as a no. Reversed, I read it as unclear, neither a clean yes nor a clean no. My free yes or no tarot draw uses the Major Arcana only, so if you want a quick draw, use that; these Minor Arcana values are the ones I apply when a full deck is in play.
Tina Gong's the Four of Pentacles guide at Labyrinthos associates the upright card with control, security, conservatism and holding on. Brigit Esselmont's yes or no tarot overview at Biddy Tarot notes that readers assign yes and no values differently, which is true, and it is why I state mine rather than pretend there is one correct table.
Why the upright card reads this way
I read the Four of Pentacles as no because the card is about security that has become stuck: the crouched figure, the coins guarded at every point, the city behind him that he has turned his back on. When a question wants movement, the Four says the person is holding too hard for anything to move.
The no is also, sometimes, a card of sensible caution. If the question was about a risk, the Four of Pentacles may be saying no because no is the prudent answer, and I would not overrule it lightly.
The Four of Pentacles reversed as yes or no
Reversed, I read the Four of Pentacles as unclear. The reversal describes letting go, generosity, or alternatively a loss of control and money slipping away. Those lead in different directions.
If you drew the Four of Pentacles reversed, ask whether you have released something on purpose or whether something has been taken. The first opens toward a yes. The second needs a different question.
The Four of Pentacles yes or no in a love question
In a love question, the Four of Pentacles is a no to a relationship where one person is too guarded to let the other in, and a no to possessiveness dressed as devotion. It is often a card about fear of loss. Reversed, it suggests the grip is loosening and asks whether that is openness or panic.
The Four of Pentacles yes or no for work and money
For work and money, the Four of Pentacles upright is a no to spending, risking or changing, and sometimes that no is wisdom. It is a card of savings held and opportunities missed in equal measure. Reversed, it describes money moving, out as spending or out as loss, and asks which.
When a yes or no draw is the wrong tool
The Four of Pentacles answers questions about holding and security. Its no can be fear or prudence, and the card does not say which; your accounts and your honesty do. A single card answers a single, well-formed question. If the question is really three questions, or is about another person's choices, a yes or no draw will give you a confident answer to the wrong thing. My guide to a one question psychic reading explains how I handle questions that need more than one card.
What to record before drawing again
Keep three short notes: the exact question you asked, the four things you are holding most tightly, and whether the holding is protecting you or trapping you. The third note decides what the no means.
For comparison, the Five of Pentacles yes or no and the Devil yes or no answer differently. The the Four of Pentacles card meaning page covers the card in full, and the Four of Pentacles as timing and the Four of Pentacles as feelings cover the two other questions people most often ask of it.
