How I Became a Psychic Medium: Chaya's Story

I didn't choose this work. It found me long before I had any say in it.

I was born into a Romani family in Ireland, the fourth generation of women in my line to carry the gift. In my family, the ability to perceive beyond the physical world wasn't unusual. It was simply part of life. My grandmother read for the women in our community. Her mother before her did the same. By the time I came along, the gift wasn't something that needed explaining. It was inherited, like the shape of your hands or the colour of your eyes.

Knowing something runs in your blood doesn't make it easy to carry.

Growing Up With It

From a young age I was aware of things I couldn't account for. Feelings about people that turned out to be true. Knowing something had happened before anyone told me. Sensing presences that nobody else in the room could see or feel.

In another family this might have been frightening. In mine, it was guided gently. The older women in my line recognised what was happening and didn't shut it down or try to talk me out of it. They showed me how to hold it. How to work with what I was receiving rather than be overwhelmed by it.

There's a version of psychic mediumship that exists in films and television. Dramatic, performative, full of theatrics. That has never been my experience of this work.
