The King of Swords as a Person: The Judge Who Does Not Bend
The King of Swords as a person is the one who decides on the evidence and does not care how you feel about it. Here is the character, upright and reversed, in love and at work.
If you want the short answer, the King of Swords as a person is intellectual, authoritative, fair and emotionally reserved: someone who rules by logic and principle, who has standards and applies them to everyone including himself, and who finds feeling a less reliable guide than reason. They are respected more than they are loved, and they are at peace with that.
This is the king facing straight out with the sword slightly tilted, butterflies and crescent moons on the throne. He is not warm. He is correct, and he will be correct whether you like it or not.
The King of Swords as a person: the character
Tina Gong's the King of Swords guide at Labyrinthos associates the upright card with authority, truth, intellectual power and ethical judgment. Court cards are the cards most often read as people, and I treat them as a sketch of a temperament rather than a photograph of someone you know. The Minor Arcana overview at Biddy Tarot is a useful second reference for how the court is usually read.
The King of Swords person is analytical, articulate, disciplined and principled. They are often professionals: lawyers, doctors, academics, senior managers. They value truth, order and competence. They make decisions carefully and do not revisit them. They are honest, sometimes bluntly, and they expect to be dealt with honestly in return. They keep their feelings private as a matter of policy.
They are not cruel, though their judgments can feel like it. The King of Swords applies the rule because the rule is fair, and he does not exempt himself. His coldness is a form of integrity that has forgotten to be kind.
Their strengths
Clear thinking under pressure. Fairness that does not play favourites. Authority that is earned by competence. Integrity. The ability to make and stand by a hard decision. Excellent judgment in anything that can be reasoned about.
Their shadow
Emotional distance that reads as indifference. Rigidity. Judging people by rules that do not fit them. Difficulty with anything that cannot be analysed. Coldness in moments that needed warmth. A tendency to be right in a way that leaves no room for anyone else.
The King of Swords reversed as a person
Reversed, the King of Swords as a person is the authority corrupted: manipulative, tyrannical, cold to the point of cruelty, or someone who uses logic and position to control. They may be a person who abuses power, who argues in bad faith, or whose rules are really just preferences enforced on others.
At the other end, the reversal describes a King of Swords whose judgment has failed him, who has become irrational, indecisive or paranoid, and who is more frightened by that than anyone around him realises. A reversed court card is the same person on a bad day, or a person in whom the card's weakness has taken over. It is not a different character.
The King of Swords as a partner
As a partner, the King of Swords is loyal, honest, reliable, intellectually stimulating and not demonstrative. They will provide, protect and keep their word. They will not say how they feel unless asked directly, and sometimes not then. They need a partner who can read respect as love, who values honesty and competence, and who will tell them plainly when a judgment was too cold. They can learn warmth. They will not learn it from hints.
The King of Swords at work
At work, the King of Swords is the senior authority, the one whose decisions hold, the judge, the professional with standards. They are excellent in law, medicine, governance, anything that needs rigour and fairness. As a boss they are clear, exacting and just, and the people who thrive under them do good work and do not expect praise.
How to recognise the King of Swords in your life
Look for the person whose opinion ends the argument, who speaks in complete sentences, who is respected by people who do not like him. In yourself, the King of Swords is the part that decides on principle, and the part that has stopped asking what anyone feels about it. No card can identify a specific real person, and a reader who tells you a court card is definitely your ex, your boss or your new match is guessing. What the card can do is describe a type clearly enough that you recognise who in your life it fits, or which part of yourself.
What to record before drawing again
Keep three short notes: the question you asked, who the King of Swords might describe, and whether their rules are applied to themselves as strictly as to you. The third note separates upright from reversed.
For comparison, the Queen of Swords as a person and the King of Wands as a person describe different characters. The the King of Swords card meaning page covers the card in full, and the King of Swords as feelings, the King of Swords as timing and the King of Swords as a yes or no cover the other questions people most often ask of it.
