The Tower Yes or No: No, the Foundation Will Not Hold

The Tower is a no in both directions. Here is how I read it for yes or no questions, upright and reversed, and why the no is about the foundation rather than the hope.

If you want the short answer, the Tower is a no. In a yes or no draw the upright card says the present foundation is unstable and may not hold the outcome you want. It is a clear no, and it is a no about structure: the thing you are asking about is built on something that is about to give.

This is a card of no as collapse. The lightning has already struck. The question is what was standing on the rock.

Is the Tower a yes or a no?

Upright, I read the Tower as a no. Reversed, I read it as a no. Those are the same directions my free yes or no tarot draw uses, so if you drew the card there, this page explains the answer it gave you.

Tina Gong's the Tower guide at Labyrinthos associates the upright card with sudden upheaval, revelation, chaos and awakening. Brigit Esselmont's yes or no tarot overview at Biddy Tarot notes that readers assign yes and no values differently, which is true, and it is why I state mine rather than pretend there is one correct table.

Why the upright card reads this way

I read the Tower as no because the card shows a structure failing: the crown blown off, the figures falling, the fire inside. When a question asks whether something will succeed, the Tower says the base it stands on will not carry it, and that what is about to happen will show you why.

The no is often a kindness arriving as a shock. Towers that fall were going to fall. The card is telling you before you build the next floor.

The Tower reversed as yes or no

Reversed, I read the Tower as still a no. The reversal describes avoiding a difficult truth, which only delays a necessary correction: the tower propped up, the crack painted over.

If you drew the Tower reversed, the no is to pretending. The collapse has been postponed, not prevented, and the card suggests facing it on your own terms rather than waiting for the lightning.

The Tower yes or no in a love question

In a love question, the Tower is a no to a relationship built on something false: a lie, a fantasy, a foundation one of you knows is cracked. It is not always an ending; sometimes the collapse clears away the false part and leaves something honest. Reversed, it is a no to ignoring what you already know is wrong.

The Tower yes or no for work and money

For work and money, the Tower is a firm no to the plan with an unstable base: the business with no real demand, the investment that depends on nothing going wrong, the job in a company that is about to change. Reversed, it suggests the problem is being hidden rather than fixed, and the no stands until it is faced.

When a yes or no draw is the wrong tool

The Tower answers questions about stability. It is not a card of disaster for its own sake, and reading it as a prediction of catastrophe in someone's life is both frightening and wrong. A single card answers a single, well-formed question. If the question is really three questions, or is about another person's choices, a yes or no draw will give you a confident answer to the wrong thing. My guide to a one question psychic reading explains how I handle questions that need more than one card.

What to record before drawing again

Keep three short notes: the exact question you asked, what the thing you asked about is actually built on, and the crack you have been not looking at. The third note is the lightning. Look at it before it looks at you.

For comparison, Death yes or no and the Star yes or no answer differently. The the Tower card meaning page covers the card in full, and the Tower as timing and the Tower as feelings cover the two other questions people most often ask of it. You can draw a card for your own question with the yes or no tarot tool.
