The Three of Wands as Feelings: Invested, Waiting and Looking Toward You
The Three of Wands watches ships from a cliff. Here is what I would read when it appears as someone's feelings, and why the person has already sent something.
If you want the short answer, I would read the Three of Wands as feelings that are invested and expectant. In a feelings position the card suggests the person has put something into you, a message, an effort, a hope, and is watching for it to come back. It does not tell you what they expect. It tells you they are looking in your direction and have been for a while.
This is a hopeful card about someone's feelings and a patient one. The ships are out. The person on the cliff is not pretending otherwise.
The Three of Wands upright as feelings
Tina Gong's the Three of Wands guide at Labyrinthos associates the upright card with expansion, foresight, overseas opportunities and long-range plans. When the card lands in a position that asks how someone feels about you, I read those meanings as the shape of the feeling rather than as a verdict on the person.
Upright, I read the Three of Wands as a person who feels something for you that they have already acted on, in their own way, and are now waiting to see the result of. The feeling is forward-looking and a little vulnerable: they have committed something and the return is not yet in.
What I would not read into it is certainty about what they want from the return. The person is looking to the horizon. What they hope to see arrive is not drawn in the picture.
What the card does not tell you
The card does not confirm that the person's investment was in you rather than in a situation that includes you, that they will wait indefinitely, or that what comes back will be what either of you hoped. No card lets a reader check a real person's private feelings. What a card can do is give you an honest picture of the feeling you are hoping for or fearing, and a prompt to compare it with how the person actually behaves.
The Three of Wands reversed as feelings
Reversed, the Three of Wands is often read as delays, obstacles, or a lack of foresight. As feelings, I read the reversal as a person whose effort toward you has stalled or gone unanswered, and who is beginning to wonder whether the ships are coming, or as someone who thinks they reached out and never really did.
In your own question, ask which fits. Has the person been waiting on something from you that you have not given? Or do they believe they have shown interest in a way you never saw? A reversed card is a prompt to notice which of those is true from what you can see, not a diagnosis of the other person.
The Three of Wands as an ex's feelings
Asked about an ex, the Three of Wands can suggest that they have sent something toward you, a message, an apology, a signal, and are waiting to see what comes back. If you received nothing, the ships may still be at sea or may never have left harbour. Check your own horizon before deciding which. My guide to asking a psychic whether an ex will come back explains what a reading can and cannot say about that question.
The Three of Wands as a new person's feelings
For someone new, this card describes an interest that has already made an effort and is watching for your response. If you have been slow to respond, this is the card telling you the person noticed. If you want them, send a ship back.
What to watch for in their behaviour
Look for effort followed by waiting: they reached out, suggested something, made a gesture, and have since been quieter, watching. A Three of Wands feeling is visible as a pause after an offer. The pause is for you.
What to record before drawing again
Keep three short notes: the question you asked, what the person has already put toward you, and what you have sent back. If the third note is empty, that is the answer the card is pointing at. Another draw will mostly reflect the same figure on the same cliff.
For comparison, the Two of Wands as feelings and the Eight of Wands as feelings describe different feelings.
