Dreaming of Someone Who Has Died: Meaning

Dreaming of someone who has died is one of the most common dreams there is, and one of the most tender. Most of the time it is grief doing its slow work, letting you spend a little more time with a person you miss. Some of these dreams feel different, calm and very clear, and many people take those as a visit.

What the dream usually means

The mind does not simply let a person go. It keeps their voice, their kitchen, the way they said your name, and in sleep it brings those pieces out again. A dream of a parent, grandparent or friend who has passed is often a way of carrying on a relationship that ended before you were ready.

I listen closely to how the dream feels. Dreams where the person is ill, or where you are failing to save them, usually belong to the shock of the loss. Dreams where they look well, say very little and you wake feeling peaceful are the ones clients describe to me as a visit. I cannot prove what those are, but I take them seriously.

Dreams of death rarely predict a death. In all my years of reading dreams, they have almost always been about change, an ending in your own life or a feeling that has not yet been put into words.

Common versions of this dream

  • They are alive again. You know in the dream that they died, yet here they are. This is common in the first year of grief.
  • They are trying to tell you something. The words do not come through. Often this points to something you wish you had said, or heard, before they went.
  • They hand you something. A ring, a coat, a cup of tea. Notice the object, because it is usually the message.

If you keep having this dream

When the same person keeps returning, something between you is usually still open: guilt, an argument never mended, or love with nowhere to go. Writing them a letter or saying out loud what you want them to know often changes the dreams within weeks. If grief feels stuck, a grief counsellor can help a great deal.

What it can mean in love

If the person who died was a partner, these dreams often arrive just as you start to feel something for someone new. They are not a sign of disapproval. Very often the dream partner is calm, even kind, as if giving you permission.

What it can mean at work

People dream of a parent or mentor who has died when they face a choice that person would have had an opinion about. The dream brings back their advice, their standards or their warmth. Ask yourself what they would have told you to do. Sometimes the answer is the reason the dream came.

Questions about this dream

Is dreaming of someone who has died a visit from them?

It can feel like one, and I would never tell a grieving person what they experienced. Visit dreams tend to be calm, vivid and short, and you wake feeling peaceful. Grief dreams are more tangled. Both are meaningful.

Why do I dream of them being alive again?

Your mind is still catching up with the loss. In sleep it reaches for the version of life where they are still here. These dreams usually ease as the grief settles.

Why did they not speak to me in the dream?

Silence is very common in these dreams. Many people find that the feeling of the dream, rather than any words, is what they carry with them afterwards.
