Can a Medium Really Contact the Dead? What I Can and Cannot Say
What contact with someone who has died actually looks like in a reading, why it is impressions rather than conversation, and why no honest medium guarantees it.
The short answer: what I experience as contact is real to me, and I cannot prove it to you. What I can describe is what contact looks like in practice, which is not a conversation. It is impressions: a sense of someone's character, feelings, images, sometimes a detail or a phrase. It cannot be commanded, it cannot be guaranteed, and the only test that matters is whether a reading gives you something you did not supply.
I am Chaya, a fourth generation Romani psychic and medium from Ireland. I grew up in a family where this was ordinary, and I have delivered 41,500 readings since 2019. I still think the question deserves care, because it is usually asked by someone who has lost somebody.
What contact feels like from my side
It is not a voice in the room. When I turn my attention toward the person you name, what arrives is more like memory than conversation: a sense of how they held themselves, a feeling in the chest that matches how they died, an image of a kitchen or a dog or a particular chair, a phrase that is clearly theirs and not mine. Sometimes a message is plain. More often the message is a quality, such as reassurance or a kind of apology, and I have to write that down without dressing it up as words they did not say.
Why it is not a telephone
I cannot ring someone up. I cannot make a particular person come, and sometimes the one who comes is not the one you asked for. I cannot ask them a factual question and get a factual answer, which is why no honest medium will tell you where the will is or what happened in the last hour. Contact, when it comes, is on its own terms. That is frustrating, and it is also the main reason I trust it: it does not behave like something I am making up.
Why it cannot be guaranteed
Because sometimes nothing much comes. A reading can be vivid or faint, and I do not control which. A medium who always has a clear message from exactly the right person is describing a product, not an experience. I would rather tell you a reading was thin and charge you the same honest price than invent a message to fill it.
What a sceptic should look for
Specifics you did not supply. A nickname, an object, a habit, a detail about the illness, a phrase in their voice. Those are the only evidence worth the name. Vague comfort is not evidence, and in a written reading there is no reaction for me to read, so whatever I write has to stand on its own. My guide to whether psychic mediums are real goes further into how to tell a genuine reading from a cold read.
What to do with the answer
If you decide to try a reading, send little, read what comes back for the things you did not say, and judge it yourself. If you decide not to, nothing is lost; the people who have died do not need a medium for you to remember them well. If you are grieving hard, the right help is people and support around you, and a reading should sit beside that, never in place of it. My guide to what to ask a medium covers how to prepare if you do go ahead.
