Death as Intentions: To End This Version, Completely

Death as intentions is a plan to close a chapter. Here is what I would read in it, upright and reversed, and why it is not the ending people fear.

If you want the short answer, I would read Death as intentions that are transformative and final about the present form. In an intentions position the card suggests the person means to end the way things have been between you: the old pattern, the old arrangement, the old version of the relationship. It is not an intention to harm you. It is an intention that this, as it is, is over, and that what comes next will be different.

This is the rider with the black banner, and the sun rising between the towers behind. They intend an ending. They intend the dawn after it, whether or not they have said so.

Death upright as intentions

Tina Gong's Death guide at Labyrinthos associates the upright card with endings, transformation, transition and letting go. When the card lands in a position that asks what someone intends toward you, I read those meanings as the shape of their plan rather than as a promise about what they will do. Feelings and intentions are different questions; Death as feelings covers the first, and this page covers the second. The Major Arcana overview at Biddy Tarot is a useful second reference.

Upright, I read Death as a person who intends to let something finish: a relationship as it was, a role they played in your life, a version of themselves you knew. The intention is clean and it is usually accompanied by a kind of relief. If they intend to continue with you, they intend it in a new form. If they intend to leave, the leaving will be complete.

What I would not read into it is cruelty or indifference. Death is a card of transformation, and transformed intention is still intention. The question is what it becomes.

What the card does not tell you

The card does not confirm the person intends to leave you rather than change things, that the change is against you, or that what comes next is worse than what ended. No card lets a reader see another person's plans. What a card can do is describe the kind of intention that fits the person's behaviour, and give you something to check against what they actually do.

Death reversed as intentions

Reversed, Death as intentions describes an ending refused: a person who intends to keep something going that has already finished, who cannot let the old form die, or who means to change and keeps not changing. It is the card of clinging, and it keeps both people in a room with no door.

In your own question, ask whether the person is holding on to how things were past the point where it is true, or whether something is clearly over that neither of you has said out loud. A reversed card as intentions is a prompt to compare what is said with what is done, not a diagnosis of bad faith.

Death as an ex's intentions

Asked about an ex, Death as intentions can suggest the ending is complete for them and they intend to leave it closed. That is hard to read and it most reliably sets people free. If a return comes after Death, it comes as something new, not as a resumption, and the person intends it that way. My guide to asking a psychic whether an ex will come back explains what a reading can and cannot say about that question.

Death as a new person's intentions

For someone new, this card often describes a person who is changing, who has recently ended something, or whose intention toward you is part of becoming someone different. It can be a beginning that does not look like one. Give the sun time to rise.

What their intentions look like in action

Look for change already visible: they are not the person they were a month ago, they speak of before and after, they have let something go. A Death intention shows as a different person standing where the old one was.

What to record before drawing again

Keep three short notes: the question you asked, what the person seems to intend to end, and what you can see beginning. The third note is the sun between the towers.

For comparison, the Tower as intentions and the World as intentions describe different intentions. The Death card meaning page covers the card in full, and Death as a person and Death as a yes or no cover the other questions people most often ask of it.
