The Eight of Wands Yes or No: Yes, and Fast

The Eight of Wands is the fastest yes in the deck. Here is how I read it for yes or no questions, upright and reversed, and why the reversal is about delay and scattered energy.

If you want the short answer, the Eight of Wands is a yes. In a yes or no draw the upright card says the thing you are asking about is moving quickly toward you and will arrive soon. It is a yes about speed, and it often means news, a message or a sudden development.

This is a card of yes as eight staves in the air. Nothing is holding them. They are about to land.

Is the Eight of Wands a yes or a no?

Upright, I read the Eight of Wands as a yes. Reversed, I read it as unclear, neither a clean yes nor a clean no. My free yes or no tarot draw uses the Major Arcana only, so if you want a quick draw, use that; these Minor Arcana values are the ones I apply when a full deck is in play.

Tina Gong's the Eight of Wands guide at Labyrinthos associates the upright card with speed, movement, swift action and news arriving. Brigit Esselmont's yes or no tarot overview at Biddy Tarot notes that readers assign yes and no values differently, which is true, and it is why I state mine rather than pretend there is one correct table.

Why the upright card reads this way

I read the Eight of Wands as yes because the card is nothing but motion: eight wands flying through clear sky over open country, no figure, no obstacle. When a question is about whether something will happen and whether it will happen soon, the Eight says yes to both.

The yes is about arrival, not aftermath. The wands land. What they are when they land, and what you do with them, is the next question, and the Eight of Wands does not slow down to consider it.

The Eight of Wands reversed as yes or no

Reversed, I read the Eight of Wands as unclear. The reversal describes delays, miscommunication, or energy flying in too many directions at once. The thing is in motion and it is not arriving cleanly.

If you drew the Eight of Wands reversed, ask whether the delay is outside you or whether your own energy is scattered across several things. The answer settles when the wands fly in one direction.

The Eight of Wands yes or no in a love question

In a love question, the Eight of Wands is a yes to contact: a message, a call, a sudden move, a relationship accelerating. It is one of the few cards I would read as a real likelihood of hearing from someone soon. Reversed, it suggests the message is delayed or garbled, and asks for patience rather than another text.

The Eight of Wands yes or no for work and money

For work and money, the Eight of Wands is a yes to fast news, quick decisions, travel and anything that needs to move. It is a good card for "will I hear this week". Reversed, it describes delays and crossed wires and suggests confirming rather than assuming.

When a yes or no draw is the wrong tool

The Eight of Wands answers questions about speed and arrival. It is a poor card for questions about depth or endurance, which it answers by flying past them. A single card answers a single, well-formed question. If the question is really three questions, or is about another person's choices, a yes or no draw will give you a confident answer to the wrong thing. My guide to a one question psychic reading explains how I handle questions that need more than one card.

What to record before drawing again

Keep three short notes: the exact question you asked, what is in motion toward you, and what you will do when it lands. The third note is worth having ready, because this card does not give much warning.

For comparison, the Three of Wands yes or no and the Knight of Wands yes or no answer differently. The the Eight of Wands card meaning page covers the card in full, and the Eight of Wands as timing and the Eight of Wands as feelings cover the two other questions people most often ask of it.
