How Long After a Death Can a Medium Connect? Soon, Later, Years
There is no rule about waiting after a death before a medium reading, but there is a reason many mediums suggest it. What changes with time, and how to tell when you are ready.
The short answer: there is no waiting period. I have read for people a week after a death and twenty years after one, and I have had clear readings and faint readings at both ends. The reason many mediums suggest waiting is not about the person who has died. It is about you, and whether a reading in the first raw weeks will help or only add to the noise.
I am Chaya, a fourth generation Romani psychic and medium from Ireland. I have delivered 41,500 readings since 2019. This is how I answer the question when someone writes to me in the first days.
Does time make contact harder or easier?
In my experience, neither, reliably. Some very recent losses come through vividly, almost as if the person has not quite gone. Some come through faint, as if they are still finding their feet. Readings years later can be the clearest I do, with the person settled and specific. I do not promise any of that, and I would be suspicious of a medium who said recent deaths are always easier or always harder. It varies, and an honest medium says so.
Why mediums suggest waiting
Because in the first weeks you may not be able to hear anything but the loss. A reading then can be a comfort, and it can also become something you grasp at, reading every line for proof and feeling worse when a detail does not land. The traditional advice of a few months is about letting the first wave pass so that a reading can be weighed rather than clung to. It is advice, not a rule, and you know your own state better than I do.
Signs you are ready
You can think about the person without the thought taking the whole day. You have a question that is not only "are they alright". You can imagine a thin reading without it breaking you. You are curious as well as grieving. None of those has to be fully true. They are the direction to look in.
Signs to wait a little
You are hoping a reading will undo something. You would feel that a faint reading meant they did not love you. You cannot sleep or eat. In that state the right help is people, time and, if it is heavy, a bereavement service, and a reading can come later and be better for it. My guide to whether a reading can help with grief is honest about where it fits.
If you decide to go ahead
Send little: your name, theirs, your relationship, your questions. Expect impressions rather than conversation, and expect the medium to say what was faint. My guides to what to ask a medium and to a medium reading by email cover how to prepare and what the written format gives you. Whether it is a week or a decade since the death, the honest test is the same: what did the reading contain that you did not supply?
