The King of Pentacles Yes or No: Yes, Securely and Well

Written by Chaya the Medium.

The King of Pentacles is the most prosperous yes in the Minor Arcana. Here is how I read him for yes or no questions, upright and reversed, and why the reversal is a no about greed or control.

If you want the short answer, the King of Pentacles is a yes. In a yes or no draw the upright card says the thing you are asking about will succeed, prosper and be secure, under steady and capable management. It is one of the strongest yeses in the deck for money and business, and it is a settled yes rather than an exciting one.

This is a card of yes as a king among vines with a bull at his feet and a castle behind him. He has built it. It will stand.

Is the King of Pentacles a yes or a no?

Upright, I read the King of Pentacles as a yes. Reversed, I read it as a no. My free yes or no tarot draw uses the Major Arcana only, so if you want a quick draw, use that; these Minor Arcana values are the ones I apply when a full deck is in play.

Tina Gong's the King of Pentacles guide at Labyrinthos associates the upright card with wealth, security, leadership and material success. Brigit Esselmont's yes or no tarot overview at Biddy Tarot notes that readers assign yes and no values differently, which is true, and it is why I state mine rather than pretend there is one correct table.

Why the upright card reads this way

I read the King of Pentacles as yes because the card is material mastery: the grapes, the gold, the robe, the throne carved with bulls. When a question is about whether a venture will succeed, whether money will be secure, whether a provider can be relied on, the King says yes.

The yes is practical and unhurried. The King of Pentacles does not promise a windfall. He promises a well-run estate, and he expects it to be run well.

The King of Pentacles reversed as yes or no

Reversed, I read the King of Pentacles as a no. The reversal describes greed, possessiveness, financial corruption, or a focus on wealth and status that costs the people around it.

If you drew the King of Pentacles reversed, ask whether the security you are asking about comes with control, or whether the money in the situation is being handled honestly. The no is to either problem.

The King of Pentacles yes or no in a love question

In a love question, the King of Pentacles is a yes to a stable, providing partner and to a relationship with a secure material foundation. It is a card of being looked after. Reversed, it is a no to a partner who provides in order to own, and to a relationship where money is the only language.

The King of Pentacles yes or no for work and money

For work and money, the King of Pentacles is a strong yes to business success, financial security, a senior role, a sound investment, a reliable provider. It is one of the best cards for questions about a company or an employer. Reversed, it is a no to the deal driven by greed and the boss who controls through money.

When a yes or no draw is the wrong tool

The King of Pentacles answers questions about material security and competent management. He is a poor card for questions about feeling, risk or change, which he answers by consulting the accounts. A single card answers a single, well-formed question. If the question is really three questions, or is about another person's choices, a yes or no draw will give you a confident answer to the wrong thing. My guide to a one question psychic reading explains how I handle questions that need more than one card.

What to record before drawing again

Keep three short notes: the exact question you asked, the material foundation the outcome rests on, and whether the person managing it is competent and honest. The third note is the reversal's whole test.

For comparison, the Queen of Pentacles yes or no and the Emperor yes or no answer differently. The the King of Pentacles card meaning page covers the card in full, and the King of Pentacles as timing and the King of Pentacles as feelings cover the two other questions people most often ask of it.
