The Nine of Pentacles Yes or No: Yes, and Independently

The Nine of Pentacles is a yes from a vineyard you planted yourself. Here is how I read it for yes or no questions, upright and reversed, and why the reversal is about dependence.

If you want the short answer, the Nine of Pentacles is a yes. In a yes or no draw the upright card says the thing you are asking about leads to independence, comfort and self-earned security, and that you can achieve it on your own terms. It is a self-possessed yes, and a prosperous one.

This is a card of yes as a woman alone in a vineyard with a falcon on her glove. She built this. She is enjoying it.

Is the Nine of Pentacles a yes or a no?

Upright, I read the Nine of Pentacles as a yes. Reversed, I read it as unclear, neither a clean yes nor a clean no. My free yes or no tarot draw uses the Major Arcana only, so if you want a quick draw, use that; these Minor Arcana values are the ones I apply when a full deck is in play.

Tina Gong's the Nine of Pentacles guide at Labyrinthos associates the upright card with independence, luxury, self-sufficiency and fruits of labour. Brigit Esselmont's yes or no tarot overview at Biddy Tarot notes that readers assign yes and no values differently, which is true, and it is why I state mine rather than pretend there is one correct table.

Why the upright card reads this way

I read the Nine of Pentacles as yes because the card is about earned abundance enjoyed with discernment: the ripe vines, the fine robe, the trained bird, the walled garden. When a question is about whether you will be financially secure, whether you can manage alone, whether the thing will bring comfort, the Nine says yes.

The yes is independent. The Nine of Pentacles does not describe a shared achievement. If the question was about doing something with someone, the card is answering about what you can do yourself.

The Nine of Pentacles reversed as yes or no

Reversed, I read the Nine of Pentacles as unclear. The reversal describes dependence, overspending, superficial success, or an independence that has become isolation.

If you drew the Nine of Pentacles reversed, ask whether the security you are asking about is actually yours or whether it depends on someone else, and whether the vineyard wall has become a way of keeping people out.

The Nine of Pentacles yes or no in a love question

In a love question, the Nine of Pentacles is a yes to a relationship between two whole people, and a yes to being happy on your own terms whether or not the relationship comes. It is a poor card for questions about needing someone. Reversed, it suggests either dependence or a wall, and asks which.

The Nine of Pentacles yes or no for work and money

For work and money, the Nine of Pentacles is a strong yes to self-employment, financial independence, a comfortable income earned by your own work, and investments that mature. Reversed, it is a warning about spending beyond the vineyard or relying on someone else's.

When a yes or no draw is the wrong tool

The Nine of Pentacles answers questions about self-sufficiency. It is a poor card for questions about partnership, which it answers by describing a woman alone in a garden. A single card answers a single, well-formed question. If the question is really three questions, or is about another person's choices, a yes or no draw will give you a confident answer to the wrong thing. My guide to a one question psychic reading explains how I handle questions that need more than one card.

What to record before drawing again

Keep three short notes: the exact question you asked, what you have built for yourself that the card may be pointing at, and whether the thing you want would add to it or depend on someone else. The third note is the reversal.

For comparison, the Ten of Pentacles yes or no and the Queen of Pentacles yes or no answer differently. The the Nine of Pentacles card meaning page covers the card in full, and the Nine of Pentacles as timing and the Nine of Pentacles as feelings cover the two other questions people most often ask of it.
