Strength as Feelings: Patient, Steady and Gently Holding On

Strength is the woman closing the lion's mouth with her hands. Here is what I would read when it appears as someone's feelings, and why gentleness is the point.

If you want the short answer, I would read Strength as feelings that are patient, warm and quietly determined. In a feelings position the card suggests the person feels something steady for you and is managing the wilder parts of it, desire, fear, frustration, with care rather than force. It does not tell you the feeling is easy for them. It tells you they are handling it well.

This is a card of feeling under gentle control. It describes someone who could lose their head over you and is choosing not to.

Strength upright as feelings

Tina Gong's Strength guide at Labyrinthos associates the upright card with courage, compassion, inner strength and patience. When the card lands in a position that asks how someone feels about you, I read those meanings as the shape of the feeling rather than as a verdict on the person.

Upright, I read Strength as a person whose feeling for you is real and deliberately tempered: they are not playing it cool, they are being careful with something that matters. There is affection and there is self-command, and the self-command is a form of respect for you.

What I would not read into it is passivity. The lion is in the picture. The person feels the lion. What you are seeing is the hand on its jaw, which is a very different thing from no lion at all.

What the card does not tell you

The card does not confirm that the person will let the feeling show, that the patience is for you rather than a habit, or that what they are holding back is affection and not something harder. No card lets a reader check a real person's private feelings. What a card can do is give you an honest picture of the feeling you are hoping for or fearing, and a prompt to compare it with how the person actually behaves.

Strength reversed as feelings

Reversed, Strength is often read as self-doubt, weakness, or force used where gentleness was needed. As feelings, I read the reversal as a person who cannot manage what they feel about you, who swings between need and withdrawal, or who is being harsh with you because they are frightened of their own feeling.

In your own question, ask which fits. Does the person seem overwhelmed by you rather than steady? Or has their care turned rough in a way that looks like fear? A reversed card is a prompt to notice which of those is true from what you can see, not a diagnosis of the other person.

Strength as an ex's feelings

Asked about an ex, Strength can suggest that they still feel something and are holding it gently in check, out of respect for the ending or for you. That restraint is often mistaken for absence of feeling. It is not. Whether the restraint ever eases is their decision, and it will be a quiet one. My guide to asking a psychic whether an ex will come back explains what a reading can and cannot say about that question.

Strength as a new person's feelings

For someone new, this card describes a warm, patient interest from someone who will not rush you and will not be rushed. It is a very good card for the long run. It is not a card for anyone who needs the lion let loose on the first night.

What to watch for in their behaviour

Look for gentleness in hard moments: they stay kind when you are difficult, they are patient with your pace, they do not use their feelings as pressure. A Strength feeling shows in how the person treats you when things are not easy. That is the only place it can be seen.

What to record before drawing again

Keep three short notes: the question you asked, how the person has behaved when you were at your worst, and whether their patience is something you can trust rather than test. Another draw will mostly reflect the same hand on the same lion.

For comparison, Temperance as feelings and the Chariot as feelings describe different feelings.
