The Hierophant Yes or No: Yes, by the Established Route

The Hierophant is a yes to the proven way. Here is how I read it for yes or no questions, upright and reversed, and why the reversal is a no to going along with it.

If you want the short answer, the Hierophant is a yes. In a yes or no draw the upright card says the established route, trusted advice or formal commitment is favoured. It is a yes to doing things the recognised way, and it asks that the values involved actually match your own.

This is a card of yes as sanction. The two acolytes are kneeling. The keys are crossed. Something is being made official.

Is the Hierophant a yes or a no?

Upright, I read the Hierophant as a yes. Reversed, I read it as a no. Those are the same directions my free yes or no tarot draw uses, so if you drew the card there, this page explains the answer it gave you.

Tina Gong's the Hierophant guide at Labyrinthos associates the upright card with tradition, conformity, spiritual guidance and institutions. Brigit Esselmont's yes or no tarot overview at Biddy Tarot notes that readers assign yes and no values differently, which is true, and it is why I state mine rather than pretend there is one correct table.

Why the upright card reads this way

I read the Hierophant as yes because the card is about things being approved and formalised: the blessing, the institution, the proper way. When a question is about whether to commit, to follow the recognised process, to take the advice of someone who knows, the Hierophant says yes.

The yes has a condition the card is quiet about: the tradition has to be one you believe in. A Hierophant yes to a commitment you do not value is a yes to a hollow ceremony.

The Hierophant reversed as yes or no

Reversed, I read the Hierophant as a no. The reversal describes the expected route asking you to ignore what you genuinely believe: agreeing to satisfy tradition, family or pressure rather than conviction.

If you drew the Hierophant reversed, ask whose expectations the question is really serving. A no from this card is a no to conforming against yourself, and that can be the most freeing no in the deck.

The Hierophant yes or no in a love question

In a love question, the Hierophant is a yes to marriage, engagement, formal commitment and meeting the families. It is the card of making it official. Reversed, it is a no to getting engaged because it is expected, to a relationship held together by what people would say, and to a partner whose values you do not share.

The Hierophant yes or no for work and money

For work and money, the Hierophant is a yes to the established path: the qualification, the institution, the proper procedure, the advice of someone senior. Reversed, it is a no to doing something only because it is how things have always been done, and a prompt to check whether the rule still serves the goal.

When a yes or no draw is the wrong tool

The Hierophant answers questions about commitment and convention. He is the wrong card for anything that needs originality, and he will give a yes to the conventional choice even when the conventional choice is wrong for you, so read the reversal carefully. A single card answers a single, well-formed question. If the question is really three questions, or is about another person's choices, a yes or no draw will give you a confident answer to the wrong thing. My guide to a one question psychic reading explains how I handle questions that need more than one card.

What to record before drawing again

Keep three short notes: the exact question you asked, whose values the recognised route serves, and whether they are yours. The third note is the difference between the upright yes and the reversed no, whichever way the card fell.

For comparison, the Lovers yes or no and the Emperor yes or no answer differently. The the Hierophant card meaning page covers the card in full, and the Hierophant as timing and the Hierophant as feelings cover the two other questions people most often ask of it.
