The Hierophant as Feelings: Traditional, Serious and Thinking of Commitment

The Hierophant sits between two pillars with two acolytes kneeling. Here is what I would read when it appears as someone's feelings, and why it is more about structure than romance.

If you want the short answer, I would read the Hierophant as feelings that are serious, conventional and oriented toward commitment. In a feelings position the card suggests the person feels something for you that they understand in traditional terms: partnership, propriety, the approval of family, doing things the right way. It does not tell you there is passion in it. The Hierophant blesses. He does not burn.

This is a card of feeling as belonging to a tradition. For some people that is exactly the kind of love they want. For others it is a feeling with a rulebook attached.

The Hierophant upright as feelings

Tina Gong's the Hierophant guide at Labyrinthos associates the upright card with tradition, conformity, spiritual guidance and institutions. When the card lands in a position that asks how someone feels about you, I read those meanings as the shape of the feeling rather than as a verdict on the person.

Upright, I read the Hierophant as a person who sees you as someone they could commit to properly: introduce, formalise, build a conventional life with. The feeling is respectful and sincere and it comes with expectations about how things should be done. If you share those expectations, this is a strong card. If you do not, it is a card about a coming conversation.

What I would not read into it is spontaneity. The Hierophant does not do surprises. What he feels for you, he will want to be sanctioned, and sanction takes its own time.

What the card does not tell you

The card does not confirm that the person is in love rather than approving of you, that their idea of commitment matches yours, or that the tradition they belong to has room for who you are. No card lets a reader check a real person's private feelings. What a card can do is give you an honest picture of the feeling you are hoping for or fearing, and a prompt to compare it with how the person actually behaves.

The Hierophant reversed as feelings

Reversed, the Hierophant is often read as rebellion, unconventionality, or rules followed without belief. As feelings, I read the reversal as a person who feels something for you that does not fit their tradition and is struggling with that, or as someone going through the motions of a proper relationship with no feeling under the form.

In your own question, ask which fits. Does the person seem torn between you and what they were raised to want? Or do they do everything correctly with nothing behind it? A reversed card is a prompt to notice which of those is true from what you can see, not a diagnosis of the other person.

The Hierophant as an ex's feelings

Asked about an ex, the Hierophant can suggest that they still think of you in terms of what should have been, the proper life, the expected path. That is often regret about the form rather than longing for the person, and the card cannot tell them apart. My guide to asking a psychic whether an ex will come back explains what a reading can and cannot say about that question.

The Hierophant as a new person's feelings

For someone new, this card describes a serious, respectful interest from someone who is already thinking about whether you fit the life they expect to have. It is not a card for a casual start. If you want something traditional, it is a very good sign. If you do not, say so early.

What to watch for in their behaviour

Look for propriety and seriousness: they introduce you to people who matter, they talk about the future in conventional terms, they do things in the expected order. A Hierophant feeling is formal. If it is all form and you cannot find the feeling, read the reversal.

What to record before drawing again

Keep three short notes: the question you asked, what tradition or expectation the person seems to be holding you against, and whether you want to be measured by it. The third note is the conversation to have. Another draw will mostly reflect the same figure between the same pillars.

For comparison, the Emperor as feelings and the Lovers as feelings describe different feelings. The the Hierophant card meaning page covers the card outside feelings questions, and the general card meanings at Biddy Tarot are a useful second reference.
