The Lovers as Intentions: To Choose, Seriously, and Not Yet
The Lovers as intentions is a plan being weighed with the whole heart. Here is what I would read in it, upright and reversed.
If you want the short answer, I would read the Lovers as intentions that are serious and still being decided. In an intentions position the card suggests the person intends something real with you and is weighing it against something else: another option, their values, a cost. The intention is strong. The choice inside it has not been made, and the card is honest that choosing is the person's next step.
This is the two figures under the angel. Both intend the garden. Neither has stepped toward the other yet.
The Lovers upright as intentions
Tina Gong's the Lovers guide at Labyrinthos associates the upright card with love, harmony, relationships, values and choices. When the card lands in a position that asks what someone intends toward you, I read those meanings as the shape of their plan rather than as a promise about what they will do. Feelings and intentions are different questions; the Lovers as feelings covers the first, and this page covers the second. The general card meanings at Biddy Tarot are a useful second reference.
Upright, I read the Lovers as a person who takes you seriously enough that their intention toward you has become a question in their life: whether to commit, whether it fits, whether this is the right choice. They are not drifting. They are deciding, and they are deciding with their values as well as their heart.
What I would not read into it is a decision in your favour. The Lovers intend to choose well. The card describes the standing at the choice, not the outcome of it.
What the card does not tell you
The card does not confirm the person will choose you, that they are free to, or that the other option they are weighing is less attractive to them than you are. No card lets a reader see another person's plans. What a card can do is describe the kind of intention that fits the person's behaviour, and give you something to check against what they actually do.
The Lovers reversed as intentions
Reversed, the Lovers as intentions describes a choice being avoided or made badly: a person who intends to keep both options, who has chosen and not told you, or whose intentions toward you conflict with what they believe and who is resolving that conflict in the wrong direction. It can also describe infidelity intended or ongoing.
In your own question, ask whether the person seems torn in a way they will not explain, or whether their feelings and their life point in different directions, with you on one side. A reversed card as intentions is a prompt to compare what is said with what is done, not a diagnosis of bad faith.
The Lovers as an ex's intentions
Asked about an ex, the Lovers as intentions can suggest they still intend something with you and are weighing it against the reasons it ended. That weighing is real and it can go either way. The card cannot tell you which, and anyone who says it can is guessing. My guide to asking a psychic whether an ex will come back explains what a reading can and cannot say about that question.
The Lovers as a new person's intentions
For someone new, this card suggests they intend something significant with you rather than something casual, and they need time to decide. People who feel the Lovers decide carefully. The decision tends to hold once made.
What their intentions look like in action
Look for seriousness: real questions, talk about what matters to them, visible weighing rather than drifting. A Lovers intention looks like someone taking you seriously enough to be unsure. Flippancy is a different card.
What to record before drawing again
Keep three short notes: the question you asked, what the person seems to be choosing between, and what you would need from them to stay in the choice. The third note is yours to decide.
For comparison, the Two of Cups as intentions and the Devil as intentions describe different intentions. The the Lovers card meaning page covers the card in full, and the Lovers as timing and the Lovers as a yes or no cover the other questions people most often ask of it. For a personal interpretation, my guide to a love psychic reading online explains how I work, and the three-card tarot listing and customer reviews are worth reading before deciding whether to order.
