The Sun as a Person: Warm, Glad and Impossible to Dislike
The Sun as a person is the one everyone is pleased to see, including people who are not usually pleased. Here is the character, upright and reversed, in love and at work.
If you want the short answer, the Sun as a person is joyful, warm, confident, generous, open and alive: someone who radiates good feeling, who makes other people feel better by walking in, and who has nothing to hide because it would not occur to them. They are successful without strategy and loved without effort. Being near them is like standing in daylight.
This is the naked child on the white horse under the full sun, with the sunflowers and the red banner. There is nothing hidden in the picture because there is nothing to hide.
The Sun as a person: the character
Tina Gong's the Sun guide at Labyrinthos associates the upright card with joy, success, positivity, vitality and clarity. Major Arcana cards are less often read as people than the court cards are, and when they are, they describe a person living out that card's theme rather than a fixed temperament. The Major Arcana overview at Biddy Tarot is a useful second reference.
The Sun person is cheerful, honest, energetic, confident and kind. They enjoy life openly. They are often children at heart in the best sense: direct, playful, unguarded, quick to laugh. They succeed at things, partly through talent and partly because people want to help them. They say what they feel and feel mostly good things. They are not complicated.
They are not shallow, though the complicated sometimes think so. The Sun's simplicity is a kind of clarity that most people lose, and their warmth is real rather than performed.
Their strengths
Warmth. Honesty. Confidence that does not need to diminish anyone. Joy that is contagious. Energy. Generosity. The ability to make people feel welcome and seen.
Their shadow
Not understanding darkness, their own or anyone's. Naivety. A need to be liked. Overconfidence. Impatience with sadness. Taking their luck for granted. Brightness that can feel like a wall to someone in pain.
The Sun reversed as a person
Reversed, the Sun as a person is the light dimmed or the light false: someone depressed, burnt out, lacking their usual joy, or someone whose cheerfulness is a performance over something they will not look at. They may be a person who cannot stop smiling because stopping would mean feeling, or a formerly bright person who has gone grey.
At the gentler end, the reversal describes a Sun person having a cloudy season, which they find more distressing than most because they have no practice at it. A reversed card as a person is the same theme lived badly, or a person stuck in the card's lesson. It is not a different person.
The Sun as a partner
As a partner, the Sun is loving, loyal, fun, honest, generous and easy to be with, and they may struggle to understand your darker moments. They need a partner who enjoys the light without needing it to be always on, who can be honest about sadness without expecting the Sun to fix it, and who appreciates how rare uncomplicated warmth is. They are a happy love, and happiness is not nothing.
The Sun at work
At work, the Sun is the one everyone wants on their team, the natural leader, the salesperson people buy from because they like them, the morale of the office. They do well in anything public and poorly in anything that needs them to be cold. As a boss they are generous, popular and sometimes too optimistic about deadlines.
How to recognise the Sun in your life
Look for the person who is glad to see you and means it, who everyone likes, whose success seems effortless and whose life seems charmed. In yourself, the Sun is the part that is glad, and the part that has not learned what to do when it is not. No card can identify a specific real person, and a reader who tells you a Major Arcana card is definitely your ex, your boss or your new match is guessing. What the card can do is describe a theme clearly enough that you recognise who in your life is living it, or which part of yourself is.
What to record before drawing again
Keep three short notes: the question you asked, who the Sun might describe, and how they handle a bad day. The third note separates upright from reversed.
For comparison, the Star as a person and the Fool as a person describe different characters. The the Sun card meaning page covers the card in full, and the Sun as feelings, the Sun as timing and the Sun as a yes or no cover the other questions people most often ask of it.
