The Three of Cups Yes or No: Yes, and Bring Other People Into It
The Three of Cups is a cheerful yes with company in it. Here is how I read it for yes or no questions, upright and reversed, and why the reversal is about a third person.
If you want the short answer, the Three of Cups is a yes. In a yes or no draw the upright card says the thing you are asking about is supported, celebrated and shared. It is a sociable yes, and it often means the answer comes through other people rather than in private.
This is a card of yes as celebration. Three figures, three raised cups, and nobody doing it alone.
Is the Three of Cups a yes or a no?
Upright, I read the Three of Cups as a yes. Reversed, I read it as unclear, neither a clean yes nor a clean no. My free yes or no tarot draw uses the Major Arcana only, so if you want a quick draw, use that; these Minor Arcana values are the ones I apply when a full deck is in play.
Tina Gong's the Three of Cups guide at Labyrinthos associates the upright card with celebration, friendship, community and creative collaboration. Brigit Esselmont's yes or no tarot overview at Biddy Tarot notes that readers assign yes and no values differently, which is true, and it is why I state mine rather than pretend there is one correct table.
Why the upright card reads this way
I read the Three of Cups as yes because the card is about things going well enough to toast: the dance, the harvest, the circle of friends. When a question is about whether something will be a cause for happiness, the Three says yes, and suggests the happiness is shared.
The yes has a crowd in it. If the question was about something private and intimate, the Three of Cups answers that it will be good and it will be social, which is not always what was wanted.
The Three of Cups reversed as yes or no
Reversed, I read the Three of Cups as unclear. The reversal describes a group that has soured, gossip, isolation from the circle, or a third person complicating what should have been two.
If you drew the Three of Cups reversed, look at who else is in the picture. The answer to your question is being affected by other people, and it cannot settle until their part is clear.
The Three of Cups yes or no in a love question
In a love question, the Three of Cups upright is a yes to a relationship that your friends support and that brings joy, and a yes to meeting someone through your social life. It is a weaker card for deep intimacy. Reversed, it is the card people fear as a third party, and I would read it carefully: it can mean someone else is involved, and it can simply mean other people's opinions are crowding the relationship.
The Three of Cups yes or no for work and money
For work and money, the Three of Cups is a yes to team projects, launches, events and anything that succeeds through collaboration and is worth celebrating. Reversed, it suggests office politics or a group that is not working, and the answer waits on that.
When a yes or no draw is the wrong tool
The Three of Cups answers questions about shared happiness. It is a poor card for solitary goals and for questions about commitment between two people, which it answers with a party rather than a promise. A single card answers a single, well-formed question. If the question is really three questions, or is about another person's choices, a yes or no draw will give you a confident answer to the wrong thing. My guide to a one question psychic reading explains how I handle questions that need more than one card.
What to record before drawing again
Keep three short notes: the exact question you asked, who else is involved in it, and whether their involvement helps or crowds. The third note is the difference between the upright yes and the reversed uncertainty.
For comparison, the Two of Cups yes or no and the Four of Wands as timing answer differently. The the Three of Cups card meaning page covers the card in full, and the Three of Cups as timing and the Three of Cups as feelings cover the two other questions people most often ask of it.
