The Four of Wands Yes or No: Yes, and Celebrate It

The Four of Wands is a yes with a garland on it. Here is how I read it for yes or no questions, upright and reversed, and why the reversal is about instability at home.

If you want the short answer, the Four of Wands is a yes. In a yes or no draw the upright card says the thing you are asking about will be stable, welcomed and worth celebrating. It is a warm yes, and it is one of the better cards for questions about home, marriage and belonging.

This is a card of yes as a homecoming. The garland is strung. The people are dancing. The castle is behind them.

Is the Four of Wands a yes or a no?

Upright, I read the Four of Wands as a yes. Reversed, I read it as unclear, neither a clean yes nor a clean no. My free yes or no tarot draw uses the Major Arcana only, so if you want a quick draw, use that; these Minor Arcana values are the ones I apply when a full deck is in play.

Tina Gong's the Four of Wands guide at Labyrinthos associates the upright card with celebration, homecoming, harmony and community. Brigit Esselmont's yes or no tarot overview at Biddy Tarot notes that readers assign yes and no values differently, which is true, and it is why I state mine rather than pretend there is one correct table.

Why the upright card reads this way

I read the Four of Wands as yes because the card is about a stable, happy foundation reached: the four wands holding the canopy, the figures with bouquets, the welcome. When a question is about whether something will be secure and happy, the Four says yes.

The yes is a milestone rather than a finish. The Four of Wands celebrates a stage. What follows the party is the next card, and the party is still worth having.

The Four of Wands reversed as yes or no

Reversed, I read the Four of Wands as unclear. The reversal describes instability at home, a cancelled celebration, tension in a family or a group, or a milestone delayed.

If you drew the Four of Wands reversed, look at the home or the group behind the question. The answer is waiting on something there being settled.

The Four of Wands yes or no in a love question

In a love question, the Four of Wands is a yes to engagement, marriage, moving in together, being welcomed by each other's people. It is a card of the relationship becoming public and settled. Reversed, it suggests something at home is unstable, or the milestone you are asking about is not yet ready to be celebrated.

The Four of Wands yes or no for work and money

For work and money, the Four of Wands is a yes to a project reaching a stable stage, to a successful launch or event, to a home purchase or a move. Reversed, it describes instability in the team or the premises and asks that it be settled first.

When a yes or no draw is the wrong tool

The Four of Wands answers questions about stability and celebration. It is a poor card for ambitious or solitary questions, which it answers with a party rather than a plan. A single card answers a single, well-formed question. If the question is really three questions, or is about another person's choices, a yes or no draw will give you a confident answer to the wrong thing. My guide to a one question psychic reading explains how I handle questions that need more than one card.

What to record before drawing again

Keep three short notes: the exact question you asked, the milestone it is really about, and what at home or in the group would need to be stable for the celebration to happen. The third note is the reversal.

For comparison, the Ten of Cups yes or no and the Hierophant yes or no answer differently. The the Four of Wands card meaning page covers the card in full, and the Four of Wands as timing and the Four of Wands as feelings cover the two other questions people most often ask of it.
