How to Talk to a Deceased Loved One: What Helps, With or Without a Medium

You do not need a medium to talk to someone you have lost. Here is what helps on your own, what people describe noticing, and where a reading fits if you want one.

The short answer: you can talk to someone who has died any time you like, out loud or in your head, and you do not need a medium to do it. Whether anything comes back is a question I cannot settle for you. What I can tell you is what helps, what people describe noticing, and where a reading fits if you want someone else to listen on your behalf.

I am Chaya, a fourth generation Romani psychic and medium from Ireland. I have delivered 41,500 readings since 2019, and I still think the most important conversations people have with the dead are the ones they have themselves.

Talk to them as you did

Use their name. Say the ordinary things: what happened today, what annoyed you, the thing you forgot to tell them. Do it at a time and in a place that was theirs, a chair, a walk, the kitchen in the morning. You do not need candles or a ritual, though some people like one. What matters is that it is a real conversation and not a performance, and that you let it be a little silly, because they would have laughed.

Say the thing you did not say

Most of the people who come to me are carrying one sentence they never got to say. Say it. Out loud, if you can. It does not need an answer to count. Many people find that saying it once changes something, whether or not they believe anyone heard.

What people describe noticing

I am careful here, because I do not want to promise you signs. But the things people describe, again and again, are these: a dream that feels different from other dreams, a song at the right moment, a smell, a feeling of someone in the room, a bird or an animal behaving oddly, a light flickering. I cannot tell you which of these are messages and which are coincidence, and I think it is fine not to know. My guide to the signs a loved one is trying to reach you goes through them without overclaiming.

Write to them

A letter you never send is one of the oldest ways of doing this and one of the best. Write what you miss, what you are angry about, what you want them to know about how things are now. Keep it or burn it. People tell me the writing itself does more than any sign.

Where a medium reading fits

A reading is for when you want someone else to listen, and to tell you what they pick up. It can bring specifics you did not supply, which for some people is the thing that lets them stop asking whether the person is alright. It cannot be guaranteed and it should not replace the conversations above. If you want to try one, my guide to a medium reading by email sets out the written format, and what to ask a medium covers how to prepare.

What to avoid

Anyone who tells you your loved one is trapped, suffering or in need of paid work to be freed. Anyone who makes you feel you cannot reach them without help. Anything that leaves you more frightened or more dependent than before. The dead do not charge, and neither should the way you reach them. If grief is overwhelming, a bereavement service is the right help, and talking to the person you lost can sit alongside it.
