The Knight of Pentacles Yes or No: Yes, Slowly and Reliably

The Knight of Pentacles is a yes on a horse that is not moving yet. Here is how I read it for yes or no questions, upright and reversed, and why the reversal is about stagnation.

If you want the short answer, the Knight of Pentacles is a yes. In a yes or no draw the upright card says the thing you are asking about will come through steady, methodical, dependable effort, and that it will arrive later than you want and more solidly than you feared. It is the slowest yes in the deck and one of the surest.

This is a card of yes as a knight sitting still on a black horse, holding a coin, looking at the ploughed field. He will get there. He is not hurrying.

Is the Knight of Pentacles a yes or a no?

Upright, I read the Knight of Pentacles as a yes. Reversed, I read it as unclear, neither a clean yes nor a clean no. My free yes or no tarot draw uses the Major Arcana only, so if you want a quick draw, use that; these Minor Arcana values are the ones I apply when a full deck is in play.

Tina Gong's the Knight of Pentacles guide at Labyrinthos associates the upright card with hard work, routine, responsibility and dependable progress. Brigit Esselmont's yes or no tarot overview at Biddy Tarot notes that readers assign yes and no values differently, which is true, and it is why I state mine rather than pretend there is one correct table.

Why the upright card reads this way

I read the Knight of Pentacles as yes because the card is about progress that does not stop: the heavy horse, the furrowed land, the coin held steady. When a question is about whether something will be completed, whether a commitment will be kept, whether a slow approach will work, the Knight says yes.

The yes comes with a pace. If the question had urgency in it, the Knight of Pentacles is saying yes to the thing and no to the urgency, and it will not be hurried by redrawing.

The Knight of Pentacles reversed as yes or no

Reversed, I read the Knight of Pentacles as unclear. The reversal describes stagnation, boredom, stubbornness, or a routine that has stopped going anywhere. The horse has not moved in a long time.

If you drew the Knight of Pentacles reversed, ask whether steady has become stuck. The card is not refusing the goal. It is noting that the method has stopped producing movement.

The Knight of Pentacles yes or no in a love question

In a love question, the Knight of Pentacles is a yes to a reliable, committed partner and to a relationship that builds slowly and holds. It is a poor card for passion and a very good one for "will they stay". Reversed, it describes a relationship that has become routine without warmth, and asks whether the stillness is peace or stagnation.

The Knight of Pentacles yes or no for work and money

For work and money, the Knight of Pentacles is a yes to the long project finished properly, the savings built, the job that rewards consistency. Reversed, it is the card of the career that has stalled and the routine that needs changing.

When a yes or no draw is the wrong tool

The Knight of Pentacles answers questions about steady commitment. He is a poor card for anything that needs speed or change, which he answers by continuing exactly as before. A single card answers a single, well-formed question. If the question is really three questions, or is about another person's choices, a yes or no draw will give you a confident answer to the wrong thing. My guide to a one question psychic reading explains how I handle questions that need more than one card.

What to record before drawing again

Keep three short notes: the exact question you asked, the dependable things already done toward it, and whether you can accept a yes that arrives slowly. The third note is honest about you.

For comparison, the Knight of Wands yes or no and the Page of Pentacles yes or no answer differently. The the Knight of Pentacles card meaning page covers the card in full, and the Knight of Pentacles as timing and the Knight of Pentacles as feelings cover the two other questions people most often ask of it.
