Strength as a Person: Gentle, Patient and Impossible to Break

Strength as a person is the one who stays kind when it would be easier not to. Here is the character, upright and reversed, in love and at work.

If you want the short answer, Strength as a person is patient, compassionate, quietly courageous and in command of themselves: someone who handles difficult people, situations and feelings with gentleness rather than force, and who is far tougher than they look. They are the one who does not raise their voice and is obeyed anyway. They are the calm hand on the lion's jaw.

This is the woman closing the lion's mouth with her hands, with a wreath on her head and no fear on her face. She is not fighting the lion. She has tamed it.

Strength as a person: the character

Tina Gong's Strength guide at Labyrinthos associates the upright card with courage, compassion, inner strength and patience. Major Arcana cards are less often read as people than the court cards are, and when they are, they describe a person living out that card's theme rather than a fixed temperament. The Major Arcana overview at Biddy Tarot is a useful second reference.

The Strength person is warm, steady, self-possessed and kind in a way that has weight behind it. They have usually been through something that taught them their own strength, and they do not need to prove it. They are good with animals, children, frightened people and angry ones. They have strong passions and strong control, and they use the second to direct the first rather than to suppress it.

They are not passive, though their gentleness can be mistaken for it. Strength is the most quietly formidable card in the deck, and the person who carries it is not someone to underestimate.

Their strengths

Courage that does not need an audience. Patience. Compassion that holds firm. Self-mastery. The ability to calm others. Resilience. A kind of authority that comes from being trusted rather than feared.

Their shadow

Suppressing their own needs to keep the peace. Tolerating what should not be tolerated, and calling it patience. Self-doubt hidden under composure. Exhaustion from always being the steady one. Difficulty asking for help.

Strength reversed as a person

Reversed, Strength as a person is the mastery gone wrong: someone ruled by their passions, aggressive or cowardly by turns, or a person whose gentleness has become weakness and whose patience has become doormat. They may be someone who cannot control their temper or their appetites, or someone so afraid of their own lion that they have never let it out.

At the gentler end, the reversal describes a Strength person whose confidence has been worn down and who has stopped believing they can handle the lion, when they still can. A reversed card as a person is the same theme lived badly, or a person stuck in the card's lesson. It is not a different person.

Strength as a partner

As a partner, Strength is loving, patient, steady, passionate underneath and safe to be with when things are hard. They will not be rushed or bullied and they will not bully. They need a partner who sees the strength under the gentleness and does not mistake patience for permission, who looks after them back, and who will occasionally tell them they are allowed to be the one who is held.

Strength at work

At work, Strength is the one who handles the difficult client, the angry customer, the crisis, without drama. They do well in care, in teaching, in any role with difficult people in it. As a boss they are calm, fair and firm, and their teams feel safe.

How to recognise Strength in your life

Look for the person who de-escalates every argument, who the dog likes, who has been through something hard and is gentler for it. In yourself, Strength is the part that handles the lion with your hands, and the part that has started to wonder whether you should have used a weapon. No card can identify a specific real person, and a reader who tells you a Major Arcana card is definitely your ex, your boss or your new match is guessing. What the card can do is describe a theme clearly enough that you recognise who in your life is living it, or which part of yourself is.

What to record before drawing again

Keep three short notes: the question you asked, who Strength might describe, and what they are tolerating that they should not. The third note is the shadow and the reversal.

For comparison, the Chariot as a person and the King of Cups as a person describe different characters. The Strength card meaning page covers the card in full, and Strength as feelings, Strength as timing and Strength as a yes or no cover the other questions people most often ask of it.
