The Hierophant as an Outcome: Tradition and Commitment

Written by Chaya the Medium.

The Hierophant as an outcome points to the conventional path. Here is what that means in love, at work and when the card is reversed.

The Hierophant as an outcome is the traditional result. The situation is heading toward something formal and recognised: a commitment, a qualification, a ceremony or an agreement that follows the established rules.

What the Hierophant means as an outcome upright

Tina Gong's the Hierophant guide at Labyrinthos associates the upright card with spiritual wisdom, religious beliefs, conformity, tradition and institutions. In the outcome position I read those meanings as the likely direction of the situation if things carry on as they are now. An outcome card is not a fixed sentence. It shows where the current road leads, and roads can be changed. The Major Arcana overview at Biddy Tarot is a useful second reference.

Upright, the Hierophant shows the outcome taking an accepted shape. You may join a group, learn from a mentor or make something official. It favours doing things properly over doing them fast.

The Hierophant reversed as an outcome

Reversed, the Hierophant as an outcome points to breaking from convention. The result may come through an unusual route, or it may involve outgrowing a belief or institution that no longer fits.

The Hierophant as a love outcome

As a love outcome, the Hierophant is a classic card of formal commitment: engagement, marriage, meeting the family or a relationship built on shared values. Reversed, it can describe a connection that does not follow the expected script.

The Hierophant as an outcome for work and money

For work and money, the Hierophant as an outcome favours established organisations, training, exams and working within the system rather than against it. A card can describe a direction; for decisions with legal, medical or financial weight, take advice from someone qualified as well.

What helps this outcome along

Learning helps this outcome. Find the person who knows how this is done, and follow the steps.

For comparison, the Lovers as an outcome and the Fool as an outcome point somewhere different. The the Hierophant card meaning page covers the card in full, and the Hierophant as advice, the Hierophant as feelings and the Hierophant as a yes or no cover the other questions people most often ask of it.
